Madison and Clay,
Since you two are the only ones in your class working on a themes paper, I will correspond with you on the blog. Please feel free to ask questions. I will try to post comments on your posts and suggest a few resources.
Thanks,
Mrs. Robinson

I was looking through the book trying to find a quote from when Winston was writing in his diary and was frustrated that he could not find the words to describe his anger. I was trying to tie that into how the Party dehumanized the citizens of Oceania through restricting their language. Does he specifically say that he could not think of a word? On my outline you said he did, but I cannot find the quote you were talking about.

i do have one problem. I have chosen the topic of subjective vs objective reality and i am having problems with deciding which senerios in 1984 are objective or subjective.

Clay--Sorry! I looked back at the portion where he writes about his encounter with the prostitute, and I must have remembered incorrectly. He does say he has a desire to scream out a string of filthy words (but obviously can't). I suppose that is what I was thinking of. Let me know if I can help you find other examples!
Madison--What about the scene in the Ministry of Love in which O'Brien is holding up 4 fingers but wants Winston to see 5? What about the photo of Jones, Aaronson, and Rutherford? Winston certainly knew this to be objective reality, for he held the photo in his hands, but according to the party, that photo and those men never existed. I'll keep thinking of more instances that may help you.
